They are formal bodies but their power and influence is often more informal. They choose their own programme and are cross party.<\/p>\n<p>Select Committees in the House of Commons are charged with overseeing the work of a government department, examining the expenditure, administration and policy of the principal government departments.<\/p>\n<p>Lords Select Committees do not shadow the work of government departments. They consider specialist subjects, taking advantage of the Lords\u2019 expertise and the greater amount of time (compared to MPs) to examine issues. They also invite written submissions.<\/p>\n<p>Select committees will generally be considered effective when they <strong>influence debate<\/strong> and <strong>change government policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A few examples of select committees that may be particularly relevant to Imperial researchers are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/business-energy-industrial-strategy\/\">Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/environment-food-and-rural-affairs-committee\/\">Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/health-and-social-care-committee\/news\/antimicrobial-resistance-launch-17-19-\/\">Health and Social Care Committee<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/science-and-technology-committee\/\">Science and Technology Committee (Commons)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/transport-committee\/\">Transport Committee<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Select committees scrutinise government through <strong>inquiries<\/strong> on selected topics. They will set the terms of reference for each inquiry and then <strong>invite written submissions<\/strong> from interested parties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should written evidence submissions look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/the-forum\/files\/2019\/09\/forumblog2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Introduce yourself<\/strong> at the start \u2013 what is your background and expertise? What can you contribute to the debate? For example, why your research is particularly relevant and helpful.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formatting is important!<\/strong> Number your paragraphs and use spacing, separating out sections using titles. Put the date at the top.<\/li>\n<li>Emphasise your <strong>key asks<\/strong> \u2013 what do you want to happen? Avoid just stating all the problems \u2013 what are the solutions? Think creatively about recommendations \u2013 it shouldn\u2019t always be asking for more money.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Address the questions<\/strong> the committee is asking. You can quote from other sources, but please cite them.<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps the most important one: keep the evidence <strong>short, simple, to the point and free of jargon<\/strong>. Staff and parliamentarians looking at the written evidence will be pressed for time.<\/li>\n<li>Frame the submission <strong>in the public interest<\/strong>. We\u2019d be delighted to meet 1-1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A final thought<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Select committees <strong>rely entirely on evidence<\/strong> and without it, they can do very little.
