{"id":1258,"date":"2015-06-22T13:31:19","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T13:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/?p=1258"},"modified":"2015-06-22T13:31:19","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T13:31:19","slug":"departmental-news-round-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/2015\/06\/22\/departmental-news-round-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Departmental news round up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Professor Jeremy Nicholson:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 has been appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of New South Wales<br \/>\n\u2022 delivered a lecture: Systems medicine: facing personalised and public healthcare: challenges in a changing and dangerous world &#8211; Institute of Foundational Medicine, Austin Texas, 28 \u2013 30 May<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Bob Brown<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Luca Magnani<\/strong> are part of an ambitious European consortium working on breast cancer drug resistance and were awarded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epipredict.eu\/\">2 EU funded PhD positions<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Vivette Glover <\/strong>is giving the Victor Horsley Lecture at the annual meeting of the BMA on <em>\u201cPrenatal mental health- how supporting the mother can have long term benefits for the child.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Hector Keun<\/strong> just took part in a panel debate on <em>\u201cHow life affects your genes\u201d (the exposome and epigenetics)<\/em> at the Cheltenham Science Festival last Weds, together with Prof Frank Kelly (Kings) and chaired by Vivienne Parry (OBE, and MRC Board)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Sadaf Ghaem-Maghami <\/strong>has been appointed as the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists<\/p>\n<p>A Scientific Afternoon, chaired by <strong>Prof Phil Bennett<\/strong>, was held on 1st June to mark the retirement of <strong>Professor Malcolm Parker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Luca Magnani<\/strong>, JRF working with <strong>Prof Charles Coombes<\/strong>, was invited for a talk at the\u00a0prestigious Gordon Conference &#8220;Hormone-Dependent Cancers\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grc.org\/programs.aspx?id=13373\">http:\/\/www.grc.org\/programs.aspx?id=13373<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Monica Faronato<\/strong> won the best poster award at the\u00a0BSCB Spring Meeting in Warwick with her work on DMXL2 (paper published 2 weeks ago)<\/p>\n<p>Scientists involved in Breast Cancer research met with breast cancer patients at an \u201copen-house\u201d event organised by <strong>Kelly Gleason<\/strong>.\u00a0The event was a great success and provided scientists and patients with an opportunity to engage directly and further insight into translational research and patient benefit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ian Flindall&#8217;s<\/strong> abstract <em>Structured cues or modafinil for fatigue amelioration in clinicians ?
