The conservatory\u00a0was originally built for growing fruit but was then given over to Camellias which were new arrivals from plant explorers in China. Some of these plants are still here, but were nearly lost when the conservatory\u00a0fell\u00a0into disrepair. A\u00a0\u00a312.1 million project to restore the gardens\u00a0was\u00a0unveiled in June 2010.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-218\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.12.16.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-218 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.12.16-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Camellia japonica 'Imbricata'\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This\u00a0Camellia japonica &#8216;Imbricata&#8217; was probably planted in the 1820s, making it nearly 200 years old!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0Conservatory collection has 33 different varieties of Camellia, including many of the earliest varieties introduced to Britain in 1828.\u00a0 Among them is &#8216;Middlemist\u2019s red&#8217;, originally brought from China in 1804 and one of only two in the world known to still exist.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_217\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.07.27.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-217 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.07.27-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Camellia japonica 'Imbricata' bloom\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camellia japonica &#8216;Imbricata&#8217; bloom<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.15.06.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-219\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.15.06-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Pink and white Camellia flower\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pink and white Camellia flower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The gardens at Chiswick House comprise\u00a065 acres\u00a0and are one of the earliest examples of the\u00a0English Landscape Movement, when the\u00a0formality of the\u00a0renaissance-style gardens gave way to a more naturalistic look, with open vistas and winding paths among informal planting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_220\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-220\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.28.31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"size-large wp-image-220\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/03\/2015-03-12-13.28.31-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Ionic Temple and Obelisk at Chiswick House and Gardens\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ionic Temple and Obelisk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Entry to the gardens is free and well worth a look if you are in the area and want a break from the city.<\/p>\n<p>Now back to house-hunting, *sigh*.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been experiencing the twin miseries of house hunting and a heavy cold, my mum came down to help with the latter, but to brighten the day we also\u00a0visited the Camellia\u00a0show at\u00a0Chiswick Gardens\u00a0in west London.
