However, this offers flexibility for you to decide how you want to live. There are many options, living alone, with friends, in halls&#8230;so what are some factors you must consider?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Staying in halls close to campus<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you haven\u2019t gathered the courage to find friends to live with, don\u2019t worry.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/campus-life\/accommodation\/halls\/returning-students-accommodation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Evelyn Gardens<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is an accommodation for returning undergraduates that has similar layouts to first-year halls, letting you make friends with people on your floor whilst having your personal space in one-person bedrooms. These do go quickly so make sure you sign up early, you can always cancel later. The contract lasts for a year so you have a convenient place to stay for\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/urop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">UROP<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/careers\/opportunities\/internships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">summer placements<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. If you have a medical condition you can consider applying to stay in first-year accommodation through the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/disability-advisory-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Disability Advisory Service<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leave fretting over accommodation for after exams<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you are thinking about flat-sharing with friends there\u2019s no need to worry about that &#8211; most private properties don\u2019t have free properties for October until over the summer.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/student-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Student Hub<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0offers an\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/campus-life\/accommodation\/private-accommodation\/may\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">annual student housing fair<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for you to find flatmates and get to know landlords not affiliated with letting agents &#8211; the properties they offer are often more affordable and it\u2019s always useful to build a good relationship with landlords since you might need to ask them for repairs or any help in the future. To find properties approved by Imperial you can browse\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/campus-life\/accommodation\/private-accommodation\/imperial-home-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Imperial Home Solutions<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. These are more reliable than third party sites like SpareRoom or RightMove that are susceptible towards scams but useful to check out regardless to research on existing flatshares.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">General rules of thumb I stick by<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Always view properties before signing a contract.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Age range of flatmates.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Even if you don\u2019t know your housemates well the most important thing is to know they have the same kind of interests and mindset as you, and being in the similar age range makes it so much easier. Best friends do not always make the best housemates. Who you want is a housemate that is understanding and respectful of your habits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Signs of pest infestations<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The building exterior is just as important as its insides. Is the pavement clean? Are there holes in the walls? The last thing you want during exam season in the summer is to hear continuous timid squeaks from the roof or scurrying along the floor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bills included?<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Check the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/campus-life\/accommodation\/private-accommodation\/area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">average rent of the area<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Sometimes the bills included option can be a trick which makes a property more expensive than others with bills you have to pay for yourself but has cheaper electricity and heating or includes amenities that you may not use such as TV licence (which can easily be substituted for by Netflix\/Amazon Prime Student).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Location, location, location.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Because of its huge population, London is a wonderful place to get accustomed to different cultures but you need to make sure you\u2019re safe at night after a terrific night out. These are trivial but easy to forget like how bright your street is at night, access to public transport.<br \/>\n(PS. Weekday cinema showings and gigs are much cheaper than those on weekends. If you love music, take advantage of how much artists tour the UK capital compared to other cities.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Don\u2019t feel bad or singled out if you can\u2019t manage to find housemates &#8211; an excellent way to do that is to join clubs.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There is no stigma around joining clubs after freshers.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperialcollegeunion.org\/activities\/a-to-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Imperial\u2019s 300+ societies<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> are always eager to recruit.
