For theatre addicts London is like a bar for alcoholics: a paradise and a hell at the same time. Since the beginning of my PhD I\u2019ve spent a bit too much money and\u00a0time\u00a0on plays and musicals\u00a0— more than\u00a0I\u2019d ever\u00a0publicly\u00a0admit. Meanwhile I\u2019ve mastered the art of getting cheap tickets, so if you\u2019re also a theatre lover on a student\u00a0budget,\u00a0read\u00a0on! This article isn\u2019t sponsored by any of the companies I mention (unfortunately).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Install\u00a0<\/b>TodayTix<\/b><\/a>\u00a0on your phone.<\/b>\u00a0You\u2019ll be able to book tickets with one swipe, get some additional offers (e.g. 24-hour-long sales) and, most importantly, participate in lotteries. This way I managed to get affordable tickets for \u201cEverybody\u2019s Talking about Jamie\u201d just a few hours before the show — and the seats were great!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Check out\u00a0<\/b>Shakespeare\u2019s Globe<\/b><\/a>. In the summer season standing tickets cost only \u00a35, the price of lunch in the student canteen. Yes, you\u2019ll have to queue before the play to get a good spot. Yes, your legs will hurt after three hours of \u201cMacbeth\u201d. And yes, you\u2019ll get cold and wet in case of bad weather. But you\u2019ll also get a chance to\u00a0interact\u00a0with the actors and literally get inside the play. Even if you\u2019re not a fan of Shakespeare, give it a go, as the theatre features plays by\u00a0other\u00a0authors as well.<\/li>\n
  3. Join\u00a0<\/b>Entry Pass at the National Theatre<\/b><\/a>. If you\u2019re 16-25, you can sign up for free to get \u00a37.50 tickets for all plays,\u00a0from ancient to modern,\u00a0from funny to tragic, from classic to experimental.\u00a0Some plays took my breath away (\u201cAmadeus\u201d), some almost bored me to death (\u201cFollies\u201d); all in all, I book for every season, before I get too old.<\/li>\n
  4. Consult the\u00a0<\/b>T<\/b>heatre\u00a0<\/b>M<\/b>onkey<\/b><\/a>. Especially if you decide to splurge on some must-see play, make sure you get the best possible seat for your money. This website contains advice on choosing seats in all London theatres.<\/li>\n
  5. Get \u00a310 tickets at\u00a0<\/b>Young Vic<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0For under 25-year-olds they offer \u00a310 tickets for each play as well as \u201clucky dip\u201d tickets: you find out your seats on the day of the show.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    While London isn\u2019t the\u00a0cheapest\u00a0place to live in, here you can\u00a0enjoy\u00a0theatre even if on a budget, especially if you\u2019re lucky enough to be young and a student.
