So after much deliberation, I’ve decided to do a research abroad program<\/strong><\/span> next year<\/p>\n

(If I achieve 2:1 and above).<\/p>\n

This is known as the ERASMUS & Swiss-EU Mobility Program<\/span><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\u201cerasmus<\/p>\n

Why do I want to do this?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1 – I enjoy studying and living at different cultural environments.<\/p>\n

2 – I can\u00a0spend an entire term<\/strong>, working (not shadowing) in a host research lab of my choice.<\/p>\n

You don’t have that kind of opportunity as an\u00a0undergraduate,<\/p>\n

unless you do an industry placement program.<\/p>\n

(But that’s the story for another day…)<\/p>\n

3 – I want to take this extra time to better plan my future career<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(i.e. Am I genuinely passionate for research? I do enjoy research atm.)<\/p>\n

4 – To practice my German<\/strong> as I’m mostly likely to go to ETH Zurich.<\/p>\n

What do you do at that year?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1 – It depends on the host university and your learning agreement.<\/p>\n

2 – My learning agreement: 2 terms in 1 academic year.<\/p>\n

3 – 1 term full-time lectures<\/strong> & 1 term full-time research<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4 – Take exams for taught modules<\/strong> & Conduct a research report<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5 – Enjoy the exotic land \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

How much does it cost?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a01 – Overseas student pays 15% of normal tuition fee<\/strong> to Imperial.<\/p>\n

2 – Home pays a heavily reduced fee\/<\/strong>Not sure for EU due to Brexit.<\/p>\n

(But most likely the same as Home students.)<\/p>\n

3 – Living costs depend on your destination university location.<\/p>\n

What destination University choices do you have?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1 – It depends on the collaboration your department has\u00a0with other unis.<\/p>\n

2 – For Biology\/Biochemistry<\/strong> students,<\/p>\n

the choices are mostly European countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3 – You will need to speak the language being used in that destination country<\/p>\n

What do you need prepare now?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

1 – If you want to have this experience, start learning a foreign language now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2 – If you are about to enter uni, don’t worry. We have Horizons.<\/p>\n

3 – Free Horizons language courses prepare you for research abroad.<\/p>\n

4 – Work hard at uni and make sure you maintain 2:1 and above<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5 – Talk with people who did the program before for their experience.<\/p>\n
