The museum has been on my &#8216;places to visit list&#8217; for sometime, and I was particularly looking forward to meeting its famous walrus specimen, which even has its own <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HornimanWalrus\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0184.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"wp-image-202 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0184-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"The exterior of the Horniman Museum\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The exterior of the Horniman Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since rain was forecast we decided to look around the grounds of the museum before heading inside. The building is\u00a0in the\u00a0arts and style and was founded in 1901 by\u00a0Frederick John Horniman. The wall features a mosaic called\u00a0<i>Humanity in the House of Circumstance.<\/i><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_203\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0185.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-203 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0185-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Horniman bandstand and London skyline\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bandstand with London skyline<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The museum has extensive gardens which include a bandstand overlooking the London skyline and some farm animals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_204\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-204\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0190.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-204\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0190-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Alpacas at the Horniman Museum\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alpacas at the Horniman Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Inside, I was surprised to learn that the Horniman has an aquarium, but since our visit was short that would have to wait for another day. Instead, we looked at the extensive collections of\u00a0cultural artefacts from all over the world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_208\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-208\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0216.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-208\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0216-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Masks from a variety of cultures at the Horniman Museum\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-208\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Masks from a variety of cultures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then we visited the natural history collections\u00a0which include a gallery arranged by how they are classified. A live walrus has lots of skin folds, but\u00a0few people would have known that in the 1880s so it was over-stuffed to fill the loose skin out.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_205\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0201.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-205\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0201-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Meeting the Horniman walrus\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meeting the Horniman walrus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u00a0highly recommend a visit to the Horniman Museum, which is free (there is a small charge for the aquarium). I will certainly be planning another visit in the summer when the gardens will be looking their best.
