The first stop of the day was at the Corfe River where we had a great view of the ruins of Corfe Castle, an 11th Century fortification built by\u00a0William the Conqueror (and popular destination for my childhood holidays).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0162.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" class=\"wp-image-181 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2015\/02\/DSCN0162-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Corfe Castle, Dorset\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Corfe Castle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eileen and Polly demonstrated the technique of kick-sampling, where you hold a net under the water and kick the sediment for a set amount of time, this dislodges animals living on the river bed and they are then collected in the net. There were\u00a0Beadlet Anemones (<em>Actinia equina<\/em>) in several colours, you can see one below which had &#8216;babies&#8217; budding off from it. There were also some tiny Shore Crabs (<em>Carcinus maenas<\/em>).
