{"id":1079,"date":"2014-10-17T11:53:30","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T11:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/studentblogs\/emma13\/?p=359"},"modified":"2017-02-20T10:40:36","modified_gmt":"2017-02-20T10:40:36","slug":"second-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/2014\/10\/17\/second-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0This has been a busy week \ud83d\ude1b<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">For a start I made Dino cakes:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_360\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/Tea3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-360 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/Tea3-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"Tea3\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dinos :0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">For seconds, lectures are already interesting \ud83d\ude1b I finally found out what people are going on about when they say \u2018centrifugal force isn\u2019t real\u2019 and how Newton\u2019s laws can apply when we are not in an inertial reference frame. That has bugged me for years\u2014being on a spinning planet flying across the solar system, how can we use F=ma if we are already always accelerating?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">It turns out when you look down at the Earth from a stable\u2014let\u2019s say relative to the Sun, vantage point, you see things on the surface of Earth moving as you would from Newton\u2019s laws. However, if translate that co-ordinate system to being on the Earth as it is rotating, you actually see things acting as if they have two extra forces on them\u2014the Coriolis force and Centrifugal force. These are \u2018fictitious forces\u2019 which only seem to exist because of your choice of spinning co-ordinate system, and don\u2019t have a physical thing causing them to happen. They are always multiplied by the mass of the object, so that the overall acceleration is independent of mass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0Hmm, a thing that looks like a force and is proportional to the mass of the object. Does that remind you of anything?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Yep. You are right. Gravity turns out to be one of these fictitious forces in general relativity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Back to centripetal and centrifugal forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The centripetal force is the real, obvious common sense one that pulls spinning things towards the centre of their spinning path e.g. the gravity of the Sun acting on the Earth, or the piece of string connected to a conker you are spinning around your head. If it wasn\u2019t there, the thing would fly off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Centrifugal force is that feeling you get when you are on a roundabout spinning really fast and your body feels pushed out towards the sides, or the reason why when you spin a bucket of water around your head the water doesn\u2019t fall out. This feels like a real force pushing you out, but from an non-rotating observer\u2019s point of view it can be seen that the outward motion is just from you on the roundabout or the water in the bucket trying to carry on in a straight line and the centripetal force (from the friction in your feet or the sides of the bucket), is struggling to pull that thing inwards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">A more obvious example is maybe if you are in a car turning a tight corner, you will see things on the dashboard sliding outwards away from the direction you are turning. This is because the frictional centripetal force on them pulling them towards the centre of your turning circle isn\u2019t great enough for them to be turned along with you, so they are not actually moving outwards, just continuing to move along in the straight line that you were before you turned the corner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">This means we can now all laugh at this XKCD cartoon in the knowledge that we get it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/tea5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-361 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/tea5.png\" alt=\"tea5\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Anyway, enough about science \ud83d\ude1b<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">This Monday I finally picked up my gold Duke of Edinburgh award which I completed two years ago \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">My brother and I went to St James\u2019s palace and met Prince Edward, as well as Glynn Purnell (an award winning chef who has been on the TV show The Great British Menu). After it, my parents took us to lunch at the Ritz, which was more fun, I must say, and I tried lobster for the first time (in a sandwich costing a cool \u00a330, though it was a very nice sandwich). Not a traditional student experience, but one to be recommended \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-362\" style=\"width: 418px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/TEA-2-e1413546527912.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-362 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/TEA-2-e1413546527912.jpg\" alt=\"TEA 2\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finery \ud83d\ude42<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_363\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-363\" style=\"width: 487px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/Tea-e1413546584241.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-363 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/student-blogs\/files\/2014\/10\/Tea-e1413546584241-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Tea\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ritzy \ud83d\ude42<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Also this weekend is the weekend of doom\u2014both days I am spending 12+ hours at the Barbican filming debates from all over the world in the Battle of Ideas. I have had a lot more camera training this week, so hopefully I know my F-stop from my ND Filter.
