I would like to preface this blog by saying I enjoy my degree. Three and a half years in and I still love physics, still like Imperial. I know the department are trying to give us a well-rounded education by making all its fourth year students take a compulsory business course.

But.

Yesterday this was our timetable:

This block of time was the end-of-course RI presentations and party!

Except it isn’t the end of the course. There are still two tasks to complete.

The presentations got off on the wrong foot really, because we’d all just got our twenty page business proposals back, and there was, let’s say, some slight controversy over the marks, which seemed to be a large spread, with many people feeling hard-done by.

Some people go to the gym to blow off steam and relax. Some people go shopping. Some people write or play music. I’m partial to all of those things, but if you know me at all well in real life, you will know that my true passion when it comes to down time and relaxation is cooking.

I have blogged about this before but #newyearnewme and all that so I thought I’d share some wisdom on the food front.

This year I decided to stop eating meat at home and become a social carnivore (that sounds absolutely ridiculous, what have I become).

Challenge of the week: The long wait

Back in October I joined final year medical students from all over the country, by applying for a job for next year. This was quite an exciting moment, with planning and excitement in deciding what area of the country I would like to work in for the next 2 years!

The programme for jobs is currently national, so all expected graduates rank areas of the country (‘deaneries’) in order of preference. There are over 20 areas, some as large as Scotland, others as small as North West London, and you have to rank them all (harder than it sounds!). The scheme provides jobs for the next 2 years, and it is a great opportunity for many to move to a new area of the country to try; if you don’t like it there it’s not that long!.

Semester one flew by fast! My winter break consisted of note taking and revising for exams, and last week exams took place. Exam time looked something like this…

When it’s close to Christmas and you’re trying to study

And start procrastinating

But then you tell yourself

So you look over your lecture notes

And video lectures

And try to learn definitions like

And you finally get it

And soon enough its 24 hours till exam time and you’re like

And wishing for

10 minutes to exam time

And exam hall tension is high

But when you see your exam questions it’s all good

And you write so much you lose your train of thought

You hand in your last paper

And walk out of the exam room like

This week we started lectures again.

Last day!

We got up really early to watch the sunrise at Carlton hill. The road was horribly muddy. I walked all the way up with Vans skating shoes, of course accompanied by stormy wind and rain. It took us about 30 minutes to get to Arthur’s seat which is the highest point of the whole Edinburgh. Here are some pics from that adventurous trip!!!

So I’m gonna take a pulse here and I will be back in approximately 2 weeks with a freshly-made summary of what I did for the exam revisions. See y’all soon 🙂 And as always, leave your questions and comments below.

Sorry I was MIA for so long, quite busy doing exam revision for two exams on Feb.

So Day 3! We got up pretty late (around 11-12 am I think). After a quick lunch, we head to the Palace of Holyroodhouse which is where Queen Mary of Scotland used to live. (Quite a marvelous Queen) A royal gallery collection beside the castle shows the finest collection of Scottish artists’ works about people in Scotland and their history.

Shortly after that. We went to the Scottish National Museum. We wanted to go to top floor for night view of Scotland.

When people started coming back after the Christmas break there was an inevitable rush of social behaviour as everyone caught up with each others holiday exploits and just like the first day of school after the holidays, everyone’s just happy to see their friends. A group of us decided to go take advantage of the 2 for £10 deal at Gourmet Burger Kitchen and after hanging out in an almost empty hall with the same 3 people for 3 weeks, it was the best night out I’d had in a while. Not to mention, the food was very satisfying after months of own pathetic cooking and ‘healthy eating’.

Shrove Tuesday Final Year Dinner

On Saturday The Class of 2016 ICSM came together for a grand night of cheer and nostalgia: the Shrove Tuesday Final Year Dinner (STFYD) 2016. Joined by many tutors, doctors, lecturers and hospital consultants, roughly 400 students started the celebrations with a sparkling welcoming reception, moving on to a delicious three-course meal with a variety of speeches and advice from guest speakers and students, the highlight of which was the launch of the STFYD video. The group were then joined by many from the year below for more fun as The Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidisms (the STFYD band) took to the stage for a time of dancing, photos and pick a mix!

A few years ago I wouldn’t have thought that I’ll live in London one day. When I first visited the city in 2013, I was amazed: it is huge, crowded, full of famous buildings and places, full of classic “London” things like the double-decker or the black cabs. Then, as I came here more often (after half of my family had moved here), I started to get used to things: I memorised the underground stations, I got an Oyster card, I queued for the bus… But only in August could I say that I was officially a Londoner, when I got my +44 phone number and changed my current city to London on Facebook.

Hey Everyone!

So I just finished unpacking all of my bags back at my room at Woodward. After being given essentially all of the family Christmas leftovers (consisting mainly of many many boxes of crackers, at least 1.5kg of blue cheese, and a whole Christmas pudding), I had to end up bringing all of my belongings up to my room in a large gardening trolley. Still, at least that means that I will not need to buy much food for the next couple of months!

After day upon day of gorging on turkey, sitting around doing essentially nothing, and a reasonable quantity of revision and work, I think I am ready to get back to work.
