The new term is underway 🙂 I hope all freshers are looking forward to getting hundreds of emails detailing the events of meat appreciation soc and all those other weird societies they signed up to because they felt guilty about taking the free sweets. If you are anything like me, you will never unsubscribe from these emails.
I actually didn’t make it to the freshers fair in the end because I spent the day learning to film (!) but there is a list of all societies on the imperial college union website that I am currently scrolling through- I would really like to join imperial radio and tv as well as the society on science policy and debate which I had never heard about before. I might try and find something sporty to do, but the summer I’ve been really enjoying exercise classes at home, so might instead end up frequenting ethos with the other keen Zumba kids.
This term I have a number of things planned outside of imperial however, one of which I will tell you about now 🙂
World writes is a charity based in East London (and so a nightmare to get to) that makes short videos, chat shows and full length documentaries about subjects that are traditionally not covered well, or at all by the mainstream media. They have filmed videos about the use of drugs in sport, illegal immigrants, alternative medicine and interviewed hundreds of experts in many fields. They also offer a free (!) learn to film course which I am currently on, getting taught how to use their expensive camera equipment, and at the end of which I will be helping film debates at the Battle of ideas in the Barbican.
That is incredibly daunting to me right now- I’ve done one full day of training, have another one full day and two half days to go. There is an awful lot to think about- co-ordinating shots with the other camera, exposure, gain, focus, etc etc, but it’s been really interesting learning my way around a camera, doing something practical and meeting people with degrees in things that are non-science!
Most of the people there have graduated from some kind of film or media background and are all incredibly motivated and practical in learning to edit themselves with different softwares or working freelance as photographers and getting work experience here there and everywhere. It’s very different from Imperial students talking about which bank they want to work for 🙂
I felt a bit out of my depth at first, but at least I know why the F number goes down instead of up when you open the aperture and why the fuzziness increases when you add gain to brighten the picture. Physics helps everywhere!
Maybe I will have to do a blog on the physics of photography sometime, though there is a great article on it here for starters…
Please continue to have a great time partying your way through freshers while I re-watch debates to try and figure out which camera is doing what and go over fourteen pages of notes on camera and tri-pod settings….
