\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has added a new layer of complexity to my role given the changes it has brought about<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 changes\u00a0<\/span><\/b>that I could never have anticipated six months ago<\/span><\/b>!<\/span><\/b>\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

I worked for several years as a\u00a0<\/span>r<\/span>esearch\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>cientist before making the transition to laboratory management, first joining Imperial in 2014 as a Trainee Laboratory Manager in the old Department of Medicine. I then spent some time working in Oxford and returned to the College just before Christmas last year. I had only been back for a few\u00a0<\/span>months <\/span>when the College closed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the\u00a0<\/span>l<\/span>ockdown my team has facilitated the move to digital teaching for MBBS students. This was completely novel for us as we had never<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>used video conferencing before. My team has been amazing in getting to grips with new software and a new way of working, as well as confidently offering support in platforms they had only just been introduced to.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking to the<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>utumn<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019re currently preparing for delivering in-person teaching again from September. There\u2019s been a lot of work\u00a0<\/span>around\u00a0<\/span>how students are going to use spaces whil<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>maintaining social distancing and how we can ensure a good student experience\u00a0<\/span>given<\/span>\u00a0the restrictions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>COVID-19 has added a new layer of complexity\u00a0<\/span>to my role\u00a0<\/span>given the changes it has brought about<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 changes\u00a0<\/span>that I could never have anticipated six months ago<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0we don\u2019t often have\u00a0direct interaction\u00a0with the students, online teaching has meant that in some ways we\u2019re now closer,\u00a0with stronger links to\u00a0Programme\u00a0Administration.\u00a0Our\u00a0team has been present in the majority of the MBBS digital teaching so that we can step in and advise if\u00a0necessary, and\u00a0we\u2019ve had some lovely messages from both staff and students to say thank you. We\u2019ve been working\u00a0hard\u00a0to ensure that the transition for the students has been as seamless as possible\u00a0so it\u2019s really reassuring when we get this kind of feedback. I don\u2019t think anybody really expects recognition for essentially just doing their job, but it\u2019s lovely to receive that kind of thanks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
