I joined the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/hamlyn-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hamlyn Centre<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0four years\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ago<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as a post-doctoral fellow, and I\u2019m now working as the Interim Head of Facilities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since COVID-19 emerged in the UK, I took the active role of helping research projects at the College and our partners in the NHS.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Part of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/global-health-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute for Global Health and Innovation<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he Hamlyn Centre is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">focused on the development of medical robots<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">widely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n engineering technology for the medical field.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have been offering our services of nanotechnology and electronic microscopy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assembly of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">medical device<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and our large medical grade 3D printing facility.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My role in these projects has focused on supporting communication between our team and any external requests, to discuss and assess the feasibility of various projects and to make sure that the facilities were ready to be used safely (especially when we were given very short notice)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have supported projects such as prototyping a fully mechanical 3D printed ventilator in collaboration with the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/bioengineering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Bioengineering<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This project took advantage of our FDM industrial 3D printer &#8211; which is capable of printing medical grade polymer &#8211; and our expertise in design for additive manufactured equipment.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019ve been able to assemble a few prototypes in our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">laboratory<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We hope that after COVID-19, the Hamlyn Centre will be given more opportunities to collaborate and help other departments to develop, assemble and test medical technology in the future.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During this time, my main escape has been to reach out to my friends, colleagues and family worldwide and have frequent social events online (we have managed to play many board games).
