\u201c<\/span><\/b>We have<\/span><\/b>\u00a0had to create new ways of replacing physical events with virtual ones. One example was to assist the\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Enterprise<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0team with a high<\/span><\/b>–<\/span><\/b>profile pitch event that could no longer take place in person.<\/span><\/b>\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

After finishing my Materials degree at the Royal School of Mines I (almost literally) fell into a role working for the Campus Services Events Department over the summer of 2006. The rest, as they say, is history. As the Events Technical Manager<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0I offer\u00a0<\/span>audio visual support to any C<\/span>ollege event and oversee a team o<\/span>f casual technicians that keep C<\/span>ollege events running. We are the sole producer of live\u00a0<\/span>streaming video content to<\/span>\u00a0Imperia<\/span>l<\/span>\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>YouTube channel<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0with over 130,000 subscribers worldwide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a department\u00a0<\/span>ro<\/span>o<\/span>ted in the physical, but having a role that projected into the virtual<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0I have been helping my colleagues, clients and staff move from one world to another. I created a Microsoft Teams presence for the department so we could all keep in\u00a0<\/span>touch, and<\/span>\u00a0offered my help to the wider catering department to assist with remote working and try to take some workload off ICT.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have also had to create new ways of replacing physical events with virtual ones. One example was to assist the\u00a0<\/span>Enterprise<\/span><\/a>\u00a0t<\/span>eam with a high<\/span>–<\/span>profile pitch event that could no longer take place in person. We looked at multiple options and decided to put together a pre-recorded video that would \u2018premiere\u2019 on YouTube and then lead them on to an interactive area to talk to the pitching companies. It turned out to be a great success in a tight timeframe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

COVID-19<\/span>\u00a0has completely changed everyone\u2019s day job. For events, this is even more pronounced. With my colleagues going on furlough in two waves (you cannot deliver events catering virtually)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0I am spending\u00a0<\/span>more of my time talking to the C<\/span>ollege departments responsible for Inaugurals, Festival, and Graduation than I am within my own department.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
