I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>help the College\u2019s staff, student<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0alumni startup founders to raise investment<\/span>\u00a0by making investments from\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>College\u2019s new \u00a32<\/span>\u00a0million<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Innovation Fund<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and introductions to angel and venture capital investors in the\u00a0<\/span>Imperial Startup Investor Network<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Previously, I have worked in technology transfer as an investor in startups from universities across the UK<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and many years ago\u00a0<\/span>complete<\/span>d a PhD in biochemistry. I was lucky to join the College in Jan<\/span>uary<\/span>\u00a0and had six weeks to meet many new colleagues before\u00a0<\/span>the first UK\u00a0<\/span>lockdown was announced and our team\u00a0<\/span>began working from<\/span>\u00a0home. From the\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>tartup team<\/span><\/a>\u2019s stately offices in South Kensington, via the\u00a0<\/span>Enterprise Lab<\/span><\/a>\u2019s trendy basement to running investment readiness courses in the glass high-rises at White City, I was lucky to share coffee with many of the people I now work with remotely.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In March 2020, we started planning our investor <\/span>event<\/span>\u00a0for May but had to cancel the usual in-person format and start from scratch to plan our first online event. I think it is\u00a0really important\u00a0that people make time for more one<\/span>-to-one<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>calls<\/span>\u00a0as that is when you can build stronger relationships than big group meetings. We have had two team members join for\u00a0<\/span>three<\/span>–<\/span>month<\/span>\u00a0secondments and have been able to develop strong working relationships despite never meeting in person.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>miss seeing my team, working from home has been great\u00a0<\/span>as I get to<\/span>\u00a0see more of my children and\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>balance work with a busy home life. During the first lockdown, managing home schooling for a\u00a0<\/span>four\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>seven-<\/span>year<\/span>–<\/span>old<\/span>\u00a0with two\u00a0<\/span>working<\/span>\u00a0parents was incredibly satisfying yet exhausting.\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m proud to say I\u2019ve got into lockdown trend of baking bread most days and I can now make\u00a0a pretty impressive\u00a0doughnut.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
