I\u2019m currently a Plasma Physics PhD student but I\u2019m based at the\u00a0<\/span>SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory<\/span><\/a>, so being in quarantine in the US has been interesting<\/span>. O<\/span>n top of that<\/span>,<\/span> I only just started my PhD at Imperial a few months ago ago! <\/span>It\u2019s not only weird tuning in to lectures at 2<\/span>\u00a0AM,<\/span>\u00a0but not being able to meet other PhD students at Imperial has been a little hard.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m the only one in my research group here at SLAC but being able to sign into\u00a0Teams\u00a0meetings with my research group and feel a part of the team even though I\u2019m miles and miles away has been nice. A<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0first working from home was\u00a0<\/span>nice<\/span>\u00a0–<\/span>\u00a0you could make as much tea as you\u2019d like, go for walks when you like and work\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0your\u00a0<\/span>pyjamas<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>too. As the weeks went by though, I really started to miss working with others.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m glad my research group at Imperial host coffee mornings which help me through my night shifts whilst I\u2019m on experiment here at SLAC. I must say that because of the pandemic I do feel like my research will be \u2018delayed\u2019<\/span>, so there is that worry about not progressing enough in my first year, but we\u2019re all in this together, and my supervisor at Imperial and here at SLAC have been so supportive<\/span>. B<\/span>eing at home\u00a0<\/span>has also\u00a0<\/span>allowed for more time to research papers and really get a good grounding in the field of my PhD<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>\u00a0have no idea when I\u2019ll be able to go back to Imperial since the restrictions in the US are quite bad for travel. To help me through the homesickness, I\u2019ve adopted new hobbies<\/span>\u00a0–<\/span>\u00a0my most recent being\u00a0<\/span>rollerskating<\/span>! I<\/span>\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0also started making more art pieces, my last being some pendulum art that has now decorated our living room!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
