{"id":102,"date":"2018-09-03T09:52:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T09:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/?p=102"},"modified":"2018-09-03T09:52:03","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T09:52:03","slug":"dr-nuria-oliva-jorge-visiting-researcher-bioengineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/2018\/09\/03\/dr-nuria-oliva-jorge-visiting-researcher-bioengineering\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Nuria Oliva Jorge, Visiting Researcher, Bioengineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-103\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2018\/09\/oliva_jorge_nuria-II-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I gained a BSc in Organic Chemistry from Ramon Llull University in Barcelona before pursuing a PhD in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics at MIT followed by a postdoc fellowship at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital (Harvard Medical School).<!--more--> To date, my research has focused largely on understanding how the performance of various biomaterials, such as collagen scaffolds or synthetic bioadhesives are affected by different environments (i.e. different patients, organs or diseases). The ultimate goal is to learn how to develop \u2018smart biomaterials\u2019 that respond and react to those differences, potentially opening a door to personalised biomaterials.<\/p>\n<p>I am now working on a collaborative project between Imperial and the Chemical Institute of Sarri\u00e1 in Barcelona \u2013 on a TECNIOspring PLUS Post-Doctoral Fellowship (within Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Action and ACCIO funding). The project focuses on the development of smart nanomaterials for the controlled delivery of growth factors, which are biomolecules that promote wound healing and repair. Current growth factor therapies use very high doses of these biomolecules, which cause serious side effects for the patient and have very high costs.
