{"id":2702,"date":"2021-03-08T09:17:11","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T09:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/?p=2702"},"modified":"2021-03-08T09:17:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T09:17:11","slug":"choosetochallenge-celebrating-ighis-women-and-championing-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/2021\/03\/08\/choosetochallenge-celebrating-ighis-women-and-championing-change\/","title":{"rendered":"#ChooseToChallenge: Celebrating IGHI\u2019s women and championing change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1125\" class=\"wp-image-2707 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2021\/03\/Main-IWD-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the Institute of Global Health Innovation, we\u2019re proud to have a community that includes a diverse range of women working in various disciplines.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Yet today, gender bias and inequality are still an issue in society. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/desa\/world%E2%80%99s-women-2020\">As of 2019, only 28% of women were holding managerial positions globally which was almost the same proportion as in 1995.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/activities\/women-at-imperial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women@Imperial Week<\/a>, we asked some of our talented female staff members what they would like to challenge in healthcare and academia.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2703\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2021\/03\/IWD-Photo-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Woman holding one hand up for International Women's Day\" \/>Co-producing in digital health<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThis International Women\u2019s Day, I choose to challenge digital health tools and solutions that aren\u2019t developed with the end users in mind and may therefore exacerbate health inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI challenge everyone to embrace and seek out co-production opportunities in developing solutions that best meet patient needs and preferences. It\u2019s important we all ensure these actions move beyond being tick-box exercises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meric Oztap, Assistant Teaching Fellow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/centre-for-health-policy\/education\/nhs-digital-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHS Digital Academy<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Support for working parents<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2704\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2021\/03\/Anna-Maria-Bielinska-IWD-pic-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI want to challenge the perceptions people hold of working parents. I had a baby during my PhD in clinical research at Imperial. During pregnancy, and throughout, I\u2019ve benefitted from great support from my supervisors Prof Catherine Urch and Dr Stephanie Archer, and Prof Ara Darzi\u2019s research managers within IGHI and the Department of Surgery and Cancer. I\u2019m now juggling motherhood and a final year PhD. Parenting or other caring responsibilities should not be a barrier to PhDs \u2013 they bring experience. You can pursue your academic and career goals with the right support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Anna-Maria Bielinska, Clinical Research Fellow, <a href=\"https:\/\/helixcentre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helix Centre<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2705\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2021\/03\/20210304_092647-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Woman holding up hand for International Women's Day\" \/><\/strong>Inclusive digital technologies<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI challenge\u00a0healthcare providers, researchers, designers, community organisations and patients to come together to develop inclusive digital technologies for healthcare.
