{"id":823,"date":"2020-01-31T09:28:49","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T09:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/icpostgrad\/?p=823"},"modified":"2020-01-31T09:28:49","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T09:28:49","slug":"two-minutes-with-marie-rider-student-programme-leader-gta-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/icpostgrad\/2020\/01\/31\/two-minutes-with-marie-rider-student-programme-leader-gta-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Two minutes with\u2026 Marie Rider (Student Programme Leader &#8211; GTA Programme)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Graduate School has appointed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/pg\/graduate-school\/students-as-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Programme Leaders<\/a>\u00a0in order to give doctoral students the opportunity to engage with our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/pg\/graduate-school\/students\/doctoral\/professional-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professional Development Programme<\/a>\u00a0and shape its design and delivery.<\/p>\n<p>In our new\u00a0<em><strong>\u2018Two Minutes with\u2026.\u2019<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0series we will be introducing you to our current SPLs and finding out their thoughts so far on the role!<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-824\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/icpostgrad\/files\/2020\/01\/Marie-Rider-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Name:<\/strong> Marie Rider<\/p>\n<p><strong>Department:<\/strong> Physics<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduce your research:<\/strong> \u00a0I work in the condensed matter theory group, and I study topological nanophotonics, where we\u2019re working to understand how light interacts with topological materials at the nanoscale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Programme Leader:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/pg\/graduate-school\/students\/doctoral\/professional-development\/gta-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate Teaching Assistant Programme<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did you choose to apply for this particular SPL role?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GTAs are a crucial bridge between students and academics. We can have a massive impact on the student experience and the GTA programme provides vital training on how to approach the role. We\u2019re the next generation of academics, and the approach to teaching and learning we develop now will stay with us throughout our careers so I really wanted to be part of the professional skills programme teaching those skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three things you\u2019ve found interesting:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The way the GTA role is defined varies massively between faculties and departments, so it\u2019s an interesting challenge to make the programme relevant and useful for GTAs across college.<\/li>\n<li>GTAs\u00a0have really different experiences of teaching and there\u2019s as much to learn from each other as from the programme leads.<\/li>\n<li>Co-leading sessions for the GTA programme is a lot different from teaching a STEM subject!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Three things you\u2019ve enjoyed most:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Working with SPLs from other faculties. \u00a0Under ordinary circumstances we might never had met!<\/li>\n<li>Getting the opportunity to co-lead some of the programme sessions. Peer-run sessions are really fun and very different to the usual teaching I get to do<\/li>\n<li>Working with the programme leader, Richard. He\u2019s so passionate and informed about what he does, so it\u2019s been great to learn from him<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What impact have you had on the programme?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been collating information from all departments across college on how they define their GTA roles and what skills they want their GTAs to have, so that we can tailor the content of the programme courses better<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to other students thinking of applying for the SPL role in future?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do it! Find a programme you\u2019re passionate about and jump in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do you think professional development training is important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being a scientist or engineer is about much more than our technical skills.
