{"id":1202,"date":"2022-06-07T10:49:10","date_gmt":"2022-06-07T10:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/icpostgrad\/?p=1202"},"modified":"2024-03-25T14:20:21","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T14:20:21","slug":"science-writing-competition-2022-joint-2nd-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/icpostgrad\/2022\/06\/07\/science-writing-competition-2022-joint-2nd-place\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Writing Competition 2022 &#8211; Joint 2nd Place"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>by Nicola Robson, MSc student, Department of Life Sciences<\/h4>\n<h3>The Fossil Gallery<\/h3>\n<p>My life in this museum may<br \/>\nSeem rather dull to you,<br \/>\n100 years stuck on a wall<br \/>\nSounds tiring, it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>But if you knew my story, you<br \/>\nWould soon begin to see<br \/>\nThat epochs pass like seconds<br \/>\nWhen you\u2019re as old as me.<\/p>\n<p>I watch you humans flit about<br \/>\nLike ants, from my display,<br \/>\nAnd I confess, I do enjoy<br \/>\nTo people-watch all day.<\/p>\n<p>And so I\u2019m quite content here, in<br \/>\nThe Fossil Gallery &#8211; yet<br \/>\nI often reminisce about<br \/>\nMy old life in the sea.<\/p>\n<p>My ancestors were lizards<br \/>\nSlinking through the sun-kissed sand,<br \/>\n\u2018Till one day they decided<br \/>\nThey were not content on land.<\/p>\n<p>A major mass extinction meant<br \/>\nAll sea creatures were killed;<br \/>\nThe ocean was an empty niche<br \/>\nWaiting to be filled.<\/p>\n<p>This drove their evolution,<br \/>\nAnd scales turned into skin,<br \/>\nTheir fingers became flippers<br \/>\nAnd tail turned into fin.<\/p>\n<p>And so my kind invaded<br \/>\nAny ocean that they pleased.<br \/>\nThe ichthyosaurs were reigning<br \/>\nEvery corner of the seas.<\/p>\n<p>The Mesozoic Era<br \/>\nWas when I lived and died.<br \/>\nWhen reptiles ruled the oceans,<br \/>\nLand, rivers, seas and skies.<\/p>\n<p>As powerful as any tide,<br \/>\nMy tail swept to and fro,<br \/>\nWide eyes made for the darkness, so<br \/>\nInto the deep, I\u2019d go.<\/p>\n<p>But I was made for swimming &#8211;<br \/>\nChasing prey in open sea.<br \/>\nYou wouldn\u2019t find another who could<br \/>\nSwim as fast as me.<\/p>\n<p>But then there came a time when I<br \/>\nCould chase my prey no more,<br \/>\nI knew my time was over<br \/>\nAnd sank gently to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I lay there for millennia,<br \/>\nUpon the ocean bed,<br \/>\nAs sediment, like sands of time<br \/>\nBuilt up upon my head.<\/p>\n<p>And as the heaviness above<br \/>\nPressed down upon my bone,<br \/>\nRock soon replaced my body,<br \/>\nAnd turned me into stone.<\/p>\n<p>The continents all shifted &#8211;<br \/>\nEither merged or broke apart.<br \/>\nNew species rose and fell, just like<br \/>\nThe beating of a heart.<\/p>\n<p>And all the while I stayed there<br \/>\n\u2018Till my rocky tomb unfurled &#8211;<br \/>\nAnd I gazed upon the landscape of<br \/>\nAn unfamiliar world.<\/p>\n<p>You dug me up and hung me on<br \/>\nThe wall for all to see.<br \/>\nNo living soul had seen a stranger<br \/>\nAnimal than me.<\/p>\n<p>A funny fish, or crocodile,<br \/>\nWere both bandied about.<br \/>\nSea-dragon, dolphin, dinosaur,<br \/>\nYou couldn\u2019t work me out.<\/p>\n<p>But science has progressed, and so<br \/>\nYou know me now, it\u2019s true.<br \/>\nBut just think, I\u2019ve had lots of time<br \/>\nTo get to know you, too.<\/p>\n<p>Your climate\u2019s getting warmer, you\u2019re<br \/>\nHeld captive by your phones,<br \/>\nWill you only stop to see it<br \/>\nWhen all that\u2019s left of you is bones?<\/p>\n<p>So as the day comes to a close here<br \/>\nIn the Fossil Gallery,<br \/>\nI watch you down below me, and<br \/>\nYou look, but do not see.<\/p>\n<p>So I look on with interest<br \/>\nBecause stay on this wall I must &#8211;<br \/>\nUntil you come to join me<br \/>\nOr I crumble into dust.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Nicola Robson, MSc student, Department of Life Sciences The Fossil Gallery My life in this museum may Seem rather dull to you, 100 years stuck on a wall Sounds tiring, it\u2019s true.
