{"id":10,"date":"2021-10-27T13:50:03","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T12:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ic-wip\/?p=10"},"modified":"2022-04-07T19:12:45","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T18:12:45","slug":"wow-helen-brindley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ic-wip\/2021\/10\/27\/wow-helen-brindley\/","title":{"rendered":"#WomenonWednesdays: Helen Brindley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"193\" height=\"262\" class=\" wp-image-49 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/ic-wip\/files\/2021\/11\/photo_hb.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week for our Women on Wednesdays\u00a0series we have Dr Helen Brindley, Professor in Earth Observation at the Department.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a little introduction, what area of Physics do you specialize in?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Atmospheric Physics \u2013 particularly climate focused Earth Observation.\u00a0 This is the design, build and use of instrumentation to monitor and understand the Earth\u2019s climate, from the ground, aircraft and space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kick started your career in Physics?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doing a work experience placement at RAF Mount Batten in Plymouth.\u00a0 If this sounds strange, the base doubled as the local weather station and I had a great time plotting maps, making observations and even giving a radio weather forecast.\u00a0 I subsequently found out that the two most important subjects for a career in meteorology were Physics and Maths.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>During your journey, what has your experience of being a woman in Physics been like? Both positives and negatives!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During my A-levels we had 3 girls in a class of 20 odd.\u00a0 Then at university I think there were around 5 out of 60.\u00a0 Personally, I\u2019ve actually found this quite useful as it means you always stand out from the crowd.\u00a0 At Imperial I\u2019ve been very lucky to have some fantastic female (and male) colleagues to both work with and look up to.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think for me that gender has ever really been an issue except that until you get used to it (and there is a question of whether you should have to) I know it can be quite daunting to go into a room or meeting where you are the only female.\u00a0 This has happened quite often in my career. It doesn\u2019t bother me now but it certainly did when I was younger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like to do outside of Physics?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love watching and playing sport.\u00a0 I used to do a lot of running but now I find that most of my energy is spent chasing after my two young children.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t change that for the world though!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week for our Women on Wednesdays\u00a0series we have Dr Helen Brindley, Professor in Earth Observation at the Department.
