{"id":3965,"date":"2017-12-13T11:42:40","date_gmt":"2017-12-13T11:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/?p=3965"},"modified":"2018-05-29T10:35:38","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T09:35:38","slug":"imperial-medical-students-recognised-in-gmc-professionalism-teaching-resource-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/2017\/12\/13\/imperial-medical-students-recognised-in-gmc-professionalism-teaching-resource-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Imperial medical students recognised in GMC professionalism teaching resource competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two final-year Imperial medical students have been acknowledged jointly by the General Medical Council and the Medical Schools Council for their design of a teaching session on professionalism.<\/p>\n<p>Sixth-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/medicine\/study\/undergraduate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MBBS<\/a> students, Luke Reader and Sam Easdon, created a lesson plan which aims to \u2018introduce students to a discussion on honesty and integrity in interactions with peers, colleagues and patients\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Initially shortlisted, the two were then awarded a runner-up position, claiming one of the top spots from the 97 overall entries to this year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson suggests beginning by asking students, \u2018What is <em>honesty and integrity<\/em> to you?\u2019, and facilitating a discussion encouraging students to reflect on their personal definitions of these themes.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"492\" height=\"473\" class=\"wp-image-3962 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/files\/2017\/12\/textmessageconvo1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To support this dialogue, the students created a \u2018live simulation\u2019 of text message conversations between hypothetical students in a medical community, discussing a recent incident.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the importance of professional behaviour, the conversation draws attention to the detrimental effect of \u2018gossip\u2019 and the subtle differences between a lack of honesty and a lack of integrity.\u00a0The students are asked to consider those themes, as well as to examine the possible impact of personal values on patient care.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"481\" height=\"462\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3966\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/files\/2017\/12\/textmessageconvo2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lesson plan then expands to include discussion of \u2018uncertainty\u2019, and asks the students to consider and recognise how acting with honesty and integrity can help when approaching difficult situations.<\/p>\n<p>Presented with four complex scenarios, the class is asked to decide where on a scale of \u2018acting with honesty and integrity\u2019 to \u2018not acting with honesty and integrity\u2019 the character in each scenario belongs &#8211; illustrating the \u2018thin red line\u2019 between the two ends of the scale &#8211; deciding whether there can be a \u2018correct\u2019 response to the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Entrants for the 2016 teaching resource competition were able to choose from any aspect of the GMC\u2019s \u2018<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmc-uk.org\/guidance\/good_medical_practice.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Achieving Good Medical Practice<\/a>\u2019 <\/em>guidance, but this year the judges requested submissions based specifically on the themes of honesty and integrity, and examination of why these qualities are important for future doctors.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is run by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmc-uk.org\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General Medical Council<\/a> in conjunction with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschools.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medical Schools Council<\/a>, and has now completed its second year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\">Sam, who has just completed a primary care placement, and Luke, currently on an endocrinology placement at Northwick Park Hospital, recommend taking part in this\u00a0<\/span>competition to any student, as professionalism is a key part of practising medicine, and describe the experience a \u2018valuable way to learn both about professionalism and about teaching\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the other shortlisted entries for the competition, and download Luke and Sam\u2019s lesson plan, on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmc-uk.org\/education\/undergraduate\/30393.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the GMC website<\/a>, or watch the text conversation video on <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3gIdzrU2a0U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two final-year Imperial medical students have been acknowledged jointly by the General Medical Council and the Medical Schools Council for their design of a teaching session on professionalism.
