{"id":3547,"date":"2017-06-19T14:58:14","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T13:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/?p=3547"},"modified":"2018-05-29T10:35:59","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T09:35:59","slug":"world-haptics-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/2017\/06\/19\/world-haptics-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"World Haptics 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3550\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3550\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"717\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3550\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/files\/2017\/06\/LucWorldHaptics-copy-1.jpg\" alt=\"A conference delegate is talked through a demonstration of the device by Luc Mar\u00e9chal\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A conference delegate is talked through a demonstration of the device by Luc Mar\u00e9chal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldhaptics2017.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Haptics<\/a> is a major conference on technology that recreates the sense of touch, and is attended by research groups from the US, Japan, Korea and the UK, some of the leading countries behind this emergent branch of science.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/f.bello\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Fernando Bello<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/engagement-and-simulation-science\/about-iccess\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Luc Mar\u00e9chal<\/a> of the SiMMS group within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/engagement-and-simulation-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science (ICCESS)<\/a> attended the conference to showcase the latest developments of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/engagement-and-simulation-science\/our-work\/projects\/direct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Rectal Examination Haptics Trainer (DiRECT) <\/a>project.\u00a0 The team have been working on technology to simulate assessment of sphincter tone; very important to a clinician carrying out an examination on a patient, but something that is not currently part of any existing training device. Dr Bello and Dr Mar\u00e9chal presented a poster with two different approaches to simulate sphincter tone, one using cables and the other employing a soft pneumatic actuator.\u00a0 They also demonstrated each prototype so that conference delegates could see \u2013 and feel \u2013 the technology for themselves.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3558\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3558\" style=\"width: 554px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" class=\" wp-image-3558\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/fom\/files\/2017\/06\/DIRECT-poster-World-Haptics-11-300x222.png\" alt=\"One of the posters presented at World Haptics\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the posters presented at World Haptics<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Feedback from delegates was very positive, with many appreciating the applied nature of the research and its potential impact on medical training.\u00a0 The SiMMS group are already thinking ahead to the next phase of their project and future haptics conferences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Haptics is a major conference on technology that recreates the sense of touch, and is attended by research groups from the US, Japan, Korea and the UK, some of the leading countries behind this emergent branch of science.
