{"id":13,"date":"2018-10-02T10:55:29","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T10:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/?p=13"},"modified":"2018-11-12T11:42:10","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T11:42:10","slug":"6th-international-academic-identities-conference-2018-hiroshima","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/2018\/10\/02\/6th-international-academic-identities-conference-2018-hiroshima\/","title":{"rendered":"6th International Academic Identities Conference 2018, Hiroshima"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We \u2013 Jo Horsburgh, Martyn Kingsbury and Monika Pazio \u2013 have recently returned from a trip to Hiroshima, Japan, where we presented at the <a href=\"http:\/\/rihe.hiroshima-u.ac.jp\/en\/2017\/12\/cfp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6<sup>th<\/sup> International Academic Identities Conference 2018<\/a> at Hiroshima University. The conference theme was \u2018The Peaceful University: aspirations for academic futures \u2013 compassion, generosity, imagination and creation\u2019 and offered us a forum for discussion of how academics\u2019 relationships with students are changing and how those changes affect the role of the university within society from a variety of international perspectives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/m.pazio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monika<\/a> and Martyn along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/c.clewley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caroline Clewley<\/a> from the Department of Physics presented on their research into staff- student partnerships with UROP students, in particular the use of visualisation to target abstract key concepts within Physics and other STEM subjects which students struggle to gain a deep conceptual understanding.<\/p>\n<p>My presentation focussed on my doctoral research into the professional identity development of medical educators, in particular the similarities and differences between different groups of medics in how they develop their identities between different communities of practice.<\/p>\n<p>As well as attending the conference in Hiroshima, on our trip to Japan we also made time to visit colleagues at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ihe.tohoku.ac.jp\/index_eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute for Excellence in Higher Education<\/a> at Tohoku University in Sendai. During our visit we discussed active learning pedagogies and the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/179734\/nobel-laureate-professor-carl-wieman-delivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Wieman<\/a>\u00a0as well as common approaches to learning and teaching at our respective institutions.
