The theme was Staff Networks. I am ashamed to say I learned a lot, most of which I should have known already. Perhaps you do, but here is a little quiz to see:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>What does BAME stand for?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What is the Imperial College motto on our coat of arms (and do you think it is apt for the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century?)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How can you get a rainbow lanyard?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What are the names of the Imperial College staff network groups that represent BAME, LGBTQ+ and disabled member of our community?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The answers can be found here on the web-pages for the staff networks<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/staff-networks\/imperial-as-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Imperial as One<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/staff-networks\/imperial-600\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Imperial600<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/staff-networks\/able-at-imperial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Able@Imperial<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can you do to support EDI?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I encourage you all to get involved and support these groups; allied members are very welcome. There are opportunities for career development, for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/support-for-staff\/training\/impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IMPACT<\/a> talent development programme for BAME staff and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/postdoc-fellows-development-centre\/courses-and-pop-ups\/courses\/springboard-womens-development-programme-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Springboard Women\u2019s Development programme<\/a>, so please talk to your line manager about this.<\/p>\n<p>Make yourself better informed by signing up for the upcoming<a href=\"http:\/\/www3.imperial.ac.uk\/newsandeventspggrp\/imperialcollege\/eventssummary\/event_6-9-2019-12-26-58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0talk by science writer and broadcaster, Angela Saini<\/a>, author of <em>Inferior<\/em> on her excellent new book, <em>Superior: the return of race science <\/em>at 12:30 &#8211; 13:30 on Wed 9 Oct.<\/p>\n<p>Very soon we will form our department People and Culture committee. I am delighted that John Tregoning has agreed to lead on this, but he is looking for support. An email inviting expressions of interest is coming to your inbox soon- please do take the chance to step up and contribute in any way you can. We are looking for contributions from all job families and career stages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bigger picture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of these issues around equality, diversity and inclusivity are at the heart of our efforts to improve the culture at Imperial.\u00a0 There is a big change coming, long overdue. The Wellcome Trust has launched its campaign \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.ac.uk\/what-we-do\/our-work\/research-culture?utm_source=snapsurveys&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=reimagineresearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reimagining research culture<\/a>\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/wh\/s.asp?k=156751261332&amp;s=W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The survey<\/a> is long &#8211; it will take you around 20 minutes &#8211; but please persevere: we need everyone\u2019s voice to be heard and counted.
