{"id":103,"date":"2017-07-24T10:46:43","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T10:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/cpd\/?p=103"},"modified":"2017-07-24T10:48:06","modified_gmt":"2017-07-24T10:48:06","slug":"the-next-10-years-challenges-innovation-and-diffusion-of-medical-robotics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/cpd\/2017\/07\/24\/the-next-10-years-challenges-innovation-and-diffusion-of-medical-robotics\/","title":{"rendered":"The Next 10 Years: Challenges, Innovation and Diffusion of Medical Robotics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"abstract\"><strong>The annual Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics came to a close during UK Robotics Week 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 350 Surgeons, clinicians, engineers, business leaders and academics recently came together at the Royal Geographical Society for the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamlyn-robotics.org\/\">Hamlyn Symposium<\/a>.\u00a0 Celebrating its 10<sup>th<\/sup> year and coinciding with the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> annual <a href=\"http:\/\/hamlyn.doc.ic.ac.uk\/roboticsweek2017\/\">UK Robotics Week<\/a>, the Symposium is hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/hamlyn-centre\/\">Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery<\/a> and offers an opportunity to test, watch demos and hear talks about the latest innovations in medical and surgical robotics.<\/p>\n<p>Medical robotics have come a long way over the past 10 years and because there is less pain and recovery time for the patient and the surgical robotic instruments are able to be much more precise and minimally invasive, there is a win-win for both the patient and surgeon.<\/p>\n<p>Marking the Symposium\u2019s 10<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, the theme this year was to look at the future of medical robotics and the steps to take to allow us to further innovate, diffuse and overcome barriers throughout the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s keynote lecture was presented by Dong-Soo Kwon from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and addressed \u2018Efforts Towards the Minimum Invasive Surgery\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"image_crop_tool_1499848565532\">\n<div class=\"photo size-253 image-left\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"photo-image\" title=\"Catherine Mohr\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.imperial.ac.uk\/icimages?p_imgid=706603\" alt=\"Catherine Mohr\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<div class=\"caption-inside\">\n<p><span class=\"caption first-child\">Invited speaker Catherine Mohr of<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"caption last-child\">Intuitive Surgical.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Other highlighted speakers included Catherine Mohr of Intuitive Surgical who discussed \u2018USA Surgical Robots as a Technology Platform\u2019 and Andrew Turberfield from the University of Oxford who addressed \u2018UK Programming Autonomous Molecular Machinery\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Karl Storz &#8211; Harold Hopkins Lecture was presented by Joseph J. Y.
