Recently, he has been developing <strong>compatible finite element methods<\/strong> for these applications. He is motivated by the <strong>geometric variational structure<\/strong> of fluid equations, which are also relevant for algorithms for exploring the geometric structure of<strong> shapes and images<\/strong>. He also develops numerical algorithms for <strong>probabilistic forecasting<\/strong> and <strong>data assimilation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Cotter is also the Undergraduate <a title=\"Admissions\" href=\"http:\/\/www3.imperial.ac.uk\/mathematics\/admissions\">Admissions<\/a> Tutor for the Department of Mathematics, the co-Director of Studies for the <a title=\"Mathematics of Planet Earth Centre for Doctoral Training\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mpecdt.org\">Mathematics of Planet Earth Centre for Doctoral Training<\/a>, and a co-Investigator for the <a title=\"Platform for Research in Simulation Method\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prism.ac.uk\/\">Platform for Research in Simulation Methods<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Cotter&#8217;s research in numerical analysis and scientific computing focusses on the design, analysis and implementation of numerical methods for weather forecasting, ocean modelling and climate simulation.
