{"id":335,"date":"2013-10-04T13:43:31","date_gmt":"2013-10-04T13:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/charityinsights\/?p=335"},"modified":"2013-10-04T13:43:31","modified_gmt":"2013-10-04T13:43:31","slug":"mapping-disasters-at-the-british-red-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/charityinsights\/2013\/10\/04\/mapping-disasters-at-the-british-red-cross\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Disasters at the British Red Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, I started my placement at the British Red Cross in London.\u00a0 The GIS team play an important and vital role here in the work of the British Red Cross, providing map services to the other departments.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the week, I joined a corporate strategy meeting and found out about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org.uk\/About-us\/Who-we-are\/The-international-Movement\/Fundamental-principles\">seven fundamental principles that guide the work of the Red Cross<\/a>, which include neutrality and impartiality. British Red Cross strategy is formed through an inclusive process of stakeholder engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Back at the GIS team, I have been getting to know the British Red Cross mapping tools and systems. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a powerful tool that can be useful in humanitarian work.<\/p>\n<p>Maps are useful in disaster and emergency situations to visualise affected areas and organise the allocation of humanitarian resources.\u00a0 The GIS team here work closely with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org.uk\/What-we-do\">national and international<\/a> teams to provide any maps they need. For example, last week the team made a security map of Nairobi after the Westgate Mall terror attacks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_336\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-336\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/charityinsights\/files\/2013\/10\/cyclones-v2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-336\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs-staging.imperial.ac.uk\/charityinsights\/files\/2013\/10\/cyclones-v2-300x237.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map to show the track and intensity of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal (Source: Author\u2019s own)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With an increase in <a href=\"http:\/\/ipcc-wg2.gov\/SREX\/\">climate-related disasters<\/a> in recent years due to climate change, the Red Cross is also building up knowledge in use of climate and weather information in order to anticipate future disasters.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it has been a busy and exciting week and I am really excited about working here at the Red Cross. \u00a0\u2026More to follow next week!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, I started my placement at the British Red Cross in London.\u00a0 The GIS team play an important and vital role here in the work of the British Red Cross, providing map services to the other departments.
