Over the course of my first week the plan for my project has changed slightly, I originally was going to make a\u00a0website from scratch, design, text, and code.\u00a0The only experience in coding that I have is from R, a language and data handling program that we use a lot in Biology for statistical computing and graphics.\u00a0In the interest of continuity, my supervisor decided that it would be best to leave the designing and coding of the website to professionals who have had\u00a0instruction and\u00a0training in this field.\u00a0When I was told, I was quite disappointed because I was very excited to learn a new skill and be responsible for something so big.\u00a0Last week, my original\u00a0pressure\u00a0of building the website was already\u00a0lifting, as\u00a0I was getting the hang of the procedure from\u00a0tons of information\u00a0that is\u00a0available on the internet, which\u00a0is\u00a0also\u00a0all\u00a0conveniently free.<\/p>\n
Despite not being able to be build it,\u00a0I did\u00a0get the ball rolling on\u00a0setting it up.\u00a0One of the very first steps in building a website is registering a domain name, which is what you put into the address bar at the top of your webpage. I emailed a few domain registrars around the country for quotes and whether they\u00a0could\u00a0give any away for charity.\u00a0Turns out many people were willing to help us, and we were able to secure a few domain names for free from a company in\u00a0Mustafa’s large\u00a0network\u00a0of connections. This company was also able to host our webpage and set up a platform to start building it.<\/p>\n
This left the writing of the website pages.\u00a0I did a lot of thinking\u00a0on what would be the most important information to include in this website. It needs to have a\u00a0comprehensive and informative website\u00a0that shares novel research, has relevant contact information, and allows donations to be made safely and efficiently.\u00a0As PCRF is a charity, it was necessary for it to have a\u00a0“Support Us” page, which will\u00a0include information for donors and\u00a0volunteers, as well as perspective partners.<\/p>\n
At the end of the week,\u00a0I\u00a0had\u00a0very constructive meetings with my supervisor and other members of the research group, where I presented my vision for the website and was able to discuss and process\u00a0their feedback.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
