Placement & Internship Officers on tour….

Helen and I have been really enjoying reading everyone’s blog posts about their Charity Insights experience. We thought it was about time we also added a post to the blog!

Last week we were able to visit Isabelle, Clara and Kristiana to hear about some of the fantastic work they have been doing with their charities.

Our first visit was to Isabelle who has been working for Rethink located in Vauxhall. The office is located on the fifteenth floor of a high rise building nicknamed “Charity Towers” as it hosts many charities including Macmillan and Comic Relief (it even has a charity recruitment agency inside). There is a great view from all sides of building as you can see! Isabelle has been getting fit walking up the stairs to beat the long queue for the lifts (especially after lunch)!

Isabelle has been working on an online survey to analyse mental health patients’ view of the service provided by their GP. She was able to attend two conferences during her internship – a great professional development experience. Paula, a Senior Policy Officer at the charity was very impressed with Isabelle’s work and how quickly she had picked up the social issues that surround Rethink’s work.

We also visited Clara working in a “virtual office” in Berkeley Square. A glamorous location next to the Bentley and Rolls Royce garages! This was our first visit to a virtual office; they have bookable meeting rooms and a business lounge to work from, similar to a hotel lobby and conference facility. Clara has been working in a very small team with one other Imperial intern and the charity CEO. She has been developing a social media campaign and organising events as well as lots of other tasks. Clara has found that working in such a small charity requires lots of multi-tasking and flexibility! The CEO Brian praised Clara’s efforts and explained how valuable her work has been.

From the glamorous Mayfair we travelled north to visit Kristiana at the dramatically different location of Hampstead Heath. Kristiana has been working with Wild about Hampstead Heath an RSPB project which is funded for three years. As part of the project they have converted old changing rooms into “the Hive” where the project is based. Kristiana has been working as a volunteer coordinator. The project manager Rachel described her contribution as “invaluable” as she has achieved many things that the charity wouldn’t normally have had time to get done. She has solely recruited at least 5 new volunteers with many more potential volunteers in the pipeline. She has also conducted a survey with lapsed volunteers to get their feedback. She has analysed data about where the majority of volunteers come from and which enquiries turn into actual volunteers. Kristiana has also been able to get involved in other activities such as organising and participating in a community festival involving family activities such as pond dipping, painting frogs and making birdfeeders. Reflecting on her experience Kristiana felt it was a great chance to learn about project management and marketing and will help her make a decision about whether to take the year in management as part of her degree.

Some fantastic feedback!

Well it’s the end of the first week of the autumn term and all but one of the Charity Insights internships has come to an end. We have had some fantastic feedback from our charity partners. Here are just a selection of their comments:

“Will was an enthusiastic, well liked and respected member of the team. I think he exceeded expectations and that is in the light of having arrived with an excellent CV in the first place. The work he has undertaken with a creative, methodical and detailed approach on Social Return on Investment is invaluable.”
Richard Mills, Big Issue

“Alex has been very enthusiastic, diligent and hardworking, and full of good ideas, and has been a real pleasure to work with. She’s been able to tackle some projects that we hadn’t got round to working on yet due to time constraints. She has used her neuroscience expertise to guide and advise us on particular on-going projects in this area.”
Helen Eaton, Royal Society Publishing

“Ben more than fulfilled the expectations of the team and the support has been invaluable. Seldom do we see such enthusiasm, reliability and commitment as we’ve experienced with Ben.” (This also came with a list of no less than 10 internship outcomes!
Sylvia Gardiner, LUCIA

“As far as we were concerned it was a real gift to us to be able to work with Lydia in this way. She did an excellent piece of work and we will be posting it on our own website shortly.  Thank you Lydia and thank you Imperial College and Charity Insights.
Charles Secrett & Fi Radford, The Act Alliance

“Taking on Eleanor through Charity Insights has been a fantastic opportunity. For many charities the ability to grow and take on extra staff is limited, therefore Charity Insights has given us the luxury of getting a project done that we normally wouldn’t have been able to do”
Manos Moschopoulos, IDEA

“The work Amira has done for the charity has been very useful to us, and having spoken to Amira she has got a lot out of her experience too – so it has been fantastic all round; I think it’s great that Imperial offers this to their students, and it’s obviously great for us as a charity too, so thank you very much!”
Patrick Smears, KEEN London

“It has been brilliant having Helena with our GIS team over the last month. Helena has been a great asset to a number of teams including ours while at the British Red Cross. She has gained some GIS expertise and these insights should stand her in good stead. We have certainly learnt much from her and her skills.”
Andrew Braye, British Red Cross

These are just a selection of the lovely comments we have received by phone and email. Well done all of you! I am looking forward to hearing more over a glass of wine and some cheese on Monday!

Visit to Idea

Just some of the data Eleanor has been analysing!
Just some of the data Eleanor has been analysing!

Yesterday Eileen and I popped along to Shoreditch, East London to visit Eleanor who is hard at work at Idea (the international debate education association). Eleanor has been researching female participation at debating competitions which has meant analysing a huge amount of data!

Eleanor and Manos
Eleanor and Manos

Eleanor’s supervisor Manos told us a bit more about the charity. We were surprised by its size; the website receives up to 3 million unique visitors in a year and Idea has offices in several countries. Interns at Idea often later go on to be full time members of staff at the organisation so Eleanor is getting some great experience.

Manos told us that taking on Eleanor through Charity Insights has been a “fantastic opportunity”. He went on to say that “for many charities the ability to grow and take on extra staff is limited, therefore Charity Insights has given us the luxury of getting a project done that we normally wouldn’t have been able to do”. He also expressed how it was great to have an intern from a science background as the majority of interns and staff have studied humanities or law.

Hard at work!
Hard at work!

Eleanor will still be hard at work for a week or so but feels that so far she has grown in confidence and enjoyed the office dynamics of working for a charity. Food for thought for future career planning!

Ben Fernando – first day at work!

So I’m just on lunch break for my first day at work! I’m at LUCIA (Life Uplifted by Change in Africa), a small Birmingham based charity that works with women and children in Ethiopia. I’ve been working with them for a while  now doing fundraising, and I decided to do Charity Insights so that I could get more involved with the research and problem-solving skills that they do.  You can find out more at http://www.luciacharity.org.uk/

So far I’ve had the usual introduction and health and safety talk, and discussed my project with my supervisor. Initially, I’m going to be looking at how to get funding for the grassroots projects that they’re looking at in Rural Ethiopia. Once we get some idea of how much money we have, we’re going to start investigating the products and solutions to problems that can be put in place to help a local school. We’re trying to make sure that they have adequate sanitation, for example.

This is obviously important because there are so many waterborne diseases that are prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. Once I can ensure that we have funding for the project, I’ll be doing some product analysis to find out exactly what’s in the market in Ethiopia and what the preferable solution will be.

But for now; I’m having a great time! Given the nice weather, we’re working outside reading through and analysing previous grant proposals and hoping to get funding for our ideas. I’m  looking forward to discussing my research at the LUCIA stall at a county fair this weekend, so fingers crossed that the good weather continues!

Internships are well underway!

The first of the Charity Insights participants started their internships last week & Eileen and I are delighted to see the blog posts starting to come in. We are really looking forward to hearing more about everyone’s internships.

We have another participant to announce – Will Prince, third year Physics who will be doing his internship at The Big Issue Foundation.

Just before the end of term we ran a preparation workshop for our participants. This was a great chance for all the interns to meet each other and to hear about the projects that they will be embarking on!

Applications are in!

Eileen and I have enjoyed reading all the applications for the charity insights scheme. There are some really fantastic organisations our students hope to work with from the Durham Wildlife Trust to the Big Issue.  We are looking forward to meeting the shortlisted applicants at interview over the next few weeks!

Don't worry the interview won't be this scary!

At interview the applicants will be required to do a 10 minute informal presentation about their chosen charity and project as well as answering some interview questions.

Good luck to all!
