Mr Graham Stark joined the College as Programme Director, White City Campus, on Monday 11 May.

In the role of Programme Director, Mr Stark will have responsibility for specifying and delivering a viable development model for the White City campus. Reporting to the CFO, Mr Muir Sanderson, and acting as the main interface with Syndicate, the Programme Director will engage with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to build and deliver the College’s vision for the White City campus.

Mr Stark joins the College from MAF Properties in Dubai, where he was Development Director leading on mixed-use communities in Oman and Beirut. Prior to his role with MAF Properties Mr Stark held director level positions with Saadiyat Island Project TDIC and The Miller Group.

Head of the Department of Materials

Professor Peter Haynes, Professor of Theory and Simulation of Materials, has accepted appointment as Head of the Department of Materials, for five years with effect from 1 July 2015, in succession to Professor Neil Alford FREng.

Professor Haynes joined the College in 2007, having held a number of prestigious fellowships at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the development of new methods for performing quantum-mechanical simulations and their application to materials science. He was awarded the Maxwell Medal and Prize for Computational Physics by the Institute of Physics in 2010 for this work and for his leading role in the development of the ONETEP materials simulation software, now marketed commercially by BIOVIA, part of the French software company Dassault Systèmes. He is the Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Theory and Simulation of Materials.

Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Professor Eric Yeatman FREng, Professor of Microengineering and Deputy Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, has accepted appointment as Head of the Department, for five years with effect from 1 September 2015, in succession to Professor Peter Cheung.

Professor Yeatman joined the College in 1989 and has held his professorship since 2005. His current research interests are in energy sources for wireless devices, radio frequency and photonic MEMS, and sensor networks. He is Co-Director of the College’s Digital Economy Lab and Co-Founder and non-executive director of Microsaic Systems plc, which was the first company to introduce a miniature mass spectrometer for liquid analysis to the market and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. He was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal in 2011, and was made a Fellow of the Academy in 2012.

Faculty of Engineering Associate Dean and Vice Deans

Dr Lorraine Craig, Academic Tutor in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering, has accepted the additional appointment as Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Engineering.

Dr Craig joined the College in 2006 following appointments at the Royal Geographical Society, the Open University, the University of Cambridge and Keele University. She is Chair of the College’s Exploration Board and was awarded the Rector’s Medal for Supporting the Student Experience in 2011. She was awarded a Fellowship by Imperial College Union in 2013.

Professor Peter Cheung will continue to serve for a further two years as the Faculty’s Vice Dean for Education, until 31 July 2017. Professor Neil Alford will also continue to serve as the Faculty’s Vice Dean for Research for two further years, until 31 July 2017.

Read Provost’s 2015 Awards for Excellence in Health and Safety in full

Sir Philip Dilley has accepted appointment as the next Chair of the Council and of the Court of Imperial College London, in succession to Baroness Manningham-Buller. Sir Philip will become Chair on 18 May 2015, and is appointed for an initial four year term to 31 May 2019.

Sir Philip graduated from Imperial with a First in Civil Engineering in 1976, and spent his engineering career within Arup Group, rising to become its Executive Chairman from 2009 to 2014. He continues to advise the firm, and since September 2014 has been Chairman of The Environment Agency. He joined Imperial’s Council in 2011.

Last year Council appointed a Search Committee to find a successor to Baroness Manningham-Buller, led by the Council’s Deputy Chair Jeremy Newsum. The Council has endorsed the recommendation of the Search Committee that Sir Philip should be its next chair. The Wellcome Trust has announced today that Baroness Manningham-Buller will become its chair in autumn 2015.

Professor Paul French, Professor of Physics, has accepted appointment as the Vice-Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Natural Sciences with effect from 1 April 2015. Professor French is in the Photonics Group of the Physics Department at Imperial College London. He was a Royal Society University Research Fellow from 1989 until 1994 when he joined the academic staff. He served as Head of the Photonics Group from 2001-2013. His research has evolved from ultrafast dye and solid-state laser physics to biomedical optics with a particular emphasis on fluorescence lifetime imaging for applications in molecular cell biology, drug discovery and clinical diagnosis. He has worked extensively with industry and his current portfolio includes the development and application of multidimensional fluorescence imaging technology for microscopy, high content analysis, endoscopy and tomography. Outside College, he has worked with the Optical Society of America, the Institute of Physics and the European Physical Society, for which he has served as Chair of the Quantum Electronics and Optics Division.

Professor Alan Spivey, Director of Education for the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Professor of Synthetic Chemistry, has accepted appointment as the Vice-Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Natural Sciences with immediate effect. Professor Spivey joined the Department of Chemistry as a Reader in 2003. He was promoted to Professor in 2008. His research interests are in the area of synthetic chemistry and in particular the development of useful new synthetic concepts and methods and the demonstration of their utility in addressing biological and medicinal questions. He was Director of Undergraduate Studies for Chemistry from 2007-2013 and has been the Chair of the FoNS Teaching Committee since 2009 and FoNS Director of Education since 2013.

Professor Gavin Screaton FMedSci, currently Vice Dean (Academic Development) in the Faculty of Medicine, has accepted appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, with effect from 1 March 2015.

Since Professor Screaton joined the College in 2004 as the Chair of Medicine, a position he continues to hold, he has served as Campus Dean for Hammersmith, and Head of the Department of Medicine (formerly Division of Medicine), before becoming Vice Dean in 2013. He holds a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award, and his research currently focuses on the immunology of infectious disease with particular respect to dengue virus infection.

Professor Screaton is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a member of the Association of Physicians and was made a Founder Senior Investigator in the National Institute for Health Research. He sits on funding panels at the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council.  He is an honorary consultant physician at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Professor Screaton will succeed Professor Dermot Kelleher FMedSci, Vice President (Health), who will take up appointment as the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, Canada, on 1 September 2015. The College will now begin the search for a successor to Professor Kelleher as Vice President (Health).

Mrs Sarah Porter Waterbury, currently Vice President of Development and Campaigns at New York University, has accepted appointment as the College’s first Vice President (Advancement). Her remit will be to build relationships and support for Imperial through fundraising and advocacy, and her responsibilities will include alumni relations, development, database management, prospect research and events. She will report to the President and will take up her position on 20 April 2015.

Mrs Waterbury has held a range of development appointments during her career. She served as Major Gifts Officer at Harvard Business School from 1985, and then as Director of Development and External Relations at the Fletcher School at Tufts University from 1993. In 1999 she became Deputy Vice President for Development at the American University of Beirut before joining the Children’s Hospital Boston as Senior Director of Campaign and Major Gifts. She took up her current role at NYU in 2009.

She was educated at Princeton University, New Jersey, where she took a BA in History, before working in private banking in South and Central America.

In advance of the Vice President (Advancement) taking up her position, the Alumni Office and the Regular Giving teams joined the Development division on 1 January 2015. Mrs Nicola Pogson, Head of Alumni Relations for the Business School, is serving on an interim basis as Head of the College’s Alumni Relations function. In this capacity she reports to Angela Bowen, Deputy Director of Development, who currently oversees all advancement functions.
